What is an ESA (electronic service address)?

 



An electronic service address (ESA) is an alias that represents the uniform resource locator or internet protocol address of a messaging provider.

 

How to get an electronic service address (ESA)?

Trustees can get the electronic service address (ESA) directly from the messaging provider like Australia post, Westpac, Wrkr. Other option is to ask your SMSF Accountant or tax agent to get this from the software which could be part of the annual software subscription at no extra cost. Examples being BGL Simple Fund 360, Class Super

 

Is electronic service address (ESA) unique to my SMSF?

No. ESA is not unique to an SMSF. Other SMSFs can have the same ESA.

 

How much does it cost to get an electronic service address (ESA)?

Depending on the ESA messaging service provide this can vary but if your accountant or tax agent get this from the software provider they use, it could be free as part of the annual software fee.

 

Do I need to provide ESA to my employer?

Yes, to get contributions to your SMSF your employer will ask you for your SMSFs ESA to process message electronically with the contribution details. Your employer will need the following information about your self-managed super fund (SMSF):

Australian business number (ABN), Bank account details (BSB and account number), Electronic Service Address (ESA).

 

To do the rollover or rollout do I need to get electronic service address (ESA)?

From 1st October 2021 if you want to do rollover to or from your SMSF it needs to be done through Super stream and to process this through super stream you need an ESA and provide this to the sending fund as part of other SMSF details. Same to do rollout from your SMSF to other fund super stream process needs to be followed and ESA is required to process this.

 

How long does it take to get an electronic service address (ESA)?

Electronic service address can be obtained in few minutes. You need to make sure SMSF has complying status of the Superfund look to get this. If the SMSF status details are removed from the Superfund lookup because of overdue tax returns you need to lodge all the outstanding return to change the status to complying and then to get the ESA.

 

Do I need to update ESA with Australian taxation office?

Yes, once you have ESA you can update this with Ato or you can ask your tax agent to update this through tax agent portal. To process rollover your ESA should be same with tax office record.
